Why We Create Music the Way We Do - It's About The Song
Become a fellow traveler, visit our Substack, "Postcards From The Road." It's a great way to support the project!
The Sonic Travelers believe every song should be free to become what it wants to be.
That may sound simple, but in today's music world it often isn't.
Artists are frequently encouraged to choose a lane, stay within a genre, and build an audience around a specific sound. While there is nothing wrong with that approach, it has never been the way we think about music.
We start with the song.
Sometimes a song calls for acoustic guitars and a simple vocal. Sometimes it needs the energy of rock and roll. Other times, it leans toward country, folk, pop, swing, cinematic music, or something that blends several styles. Rather than forcing a song into a predetermined category, we try to listen carefully and follow where it leads.
That philosophy shapes everything we do.
A Lifetime of Musical Influences
The Sonic Travelers reflects a lifetime spent listening to music from many eras and traditions.
The songs and artists that influenced us never fit neatly into a single category. Great songwriters have always borrowed ideas from different styles, creating music that felt honest to the story they wanted to tell.
We admire artists who were willing to experiment, take chances, and follow their creative instincts. Their example reminds us that good music is not defined by genre labels. It is defined by whether it moves people.
Our goal is not to recreate the past.
Our goal is to learn from it, build on it, and contribute something of our own.
Creativity Has No Expiration Date
One of the most rewarding aspects of this project is the opportunity to continue creating new work after decades of writing, performing, listening, and learning.
Experience can be a valuable creative asset.
The years bring stories, perspective, and a deeper understanding of the things that connect people. They also bring the freedom to create music for the joy of creating it.
We hope The Sonic Travelers serves as a reminder that creativity does not belong to any particular generation. New ideas can emerge at any stage of life, especially when curiosity remains alive.
Respecting Tradition While Embracing New Tools
Music has always evolved alongside technology.
From multitrack recording and synthesizers to digital workstations and modern production techniques, artists have continually found new ways to express their ideas.
We see today's tools in the same light.
Technology can help bring a song to life, but it can never replace the imagination, experiences, emotions, and creative decisions that make a song worth hearing in the first place.
The songs come first.
The tools simply help us share them.
The Journey Continues
The Sonic Travelers is an ongoing collaboration, a growing collection of songs, and an open invitation to fellow musicians, songwriters, and listeners who share our love of original music.
Some songs will take familiar roads.
Others may venture somewhere unexpected.
Either way, we'll keep following the music and seeing where it leads.
